Effects of Hypothermia on Prevention of Hearing Loss Produced by Transient Cochlear Ischemia in Gerbils
نویسنده
چکیده
Using gerbils, the effects of hypothermia on ischemia-reperfusion injury of the cochlea were studied. Under normothermic or hypothermic (rectal temperature 32°C) conditions, cochlear ischemia was created by occluding the bilateral vertebral arteries for 15 minutes in gerbils, which lack the posterior cerebral communicating arteries since the labyrinthine arteries are nourished solely by the vertebral arteries. Hearing was evaluated by recording cochlear compound action

Delayed and prolonged post-ischemic hypothermia is neuroprotective in the gerbil.
Global ischemia, in the gerbil, produces profound hippocampal CA1 loss which leads to functional abnormalities (e.g. habituation impairment). In experiment 1, gerbils were subjected to 3 or 5 min of normothermic (brain) ischemia. Hypothermic groups were cooled to 32 degrees C for 12 h beginning 1 h after ischemia, while control groups (no hypothermia) regulated their own temperature. Exploratio...
متن کاملPreconditioning by the inhalation of pure oxygen protects rat’s cochlear function against noise-induced hearing loss
Background: Occupational noise-induced hearing loss (ONIHL) is a hearing disorder that affects workers all over the world. Preconditioning with several mild or less potent stressors will effectively prevent the development of noise-induced hearing loss. This study investigated the possible preventive effects of normobaric hyperoxia preconditioning on preventing the noise-induced hearing impairm...
متن کاملBilateral Carotid Artery Occlusion Induces Cochlear Oxidative Stress and Hearing Loss in Rat
Introduction: The aim of this study was evaluation the effects of bilateral carotid artery occlusion on cochlear oxidative stress and hearing status in rat. Methods: The rats were divided into two sets. First set used for electrophysiological recording (click and 4 kHz tone burst ABR and EcochG) at day before surgery and 1st, 4th and 7th days after surgery. Animals of second set that used for ...
متن کاملSpontaneous postischemic hyperthermia is not required for severe CA1 ischemic damage in gerbils.
We have recently shown that brain temperature can drop even though rectal and skull readings are maintained near 37 degrees C during global forebrain ischemia in the gerbil. In this study gerbils were subjected to 5 min of ischemia followed by 85 min of extended halothane anesthesia, while rectal and skull temperatures were kept at normal values. This extended anesthesia procedure prevented the...

Introduction: Cochlear implantation can facilitate the development of communication skills in children with profound hearing loss. The objectives of our study were to determine the average ages at suspicion and diagnosis of hearing loss, amplification, intervention, and performing the cochlear implantation and to investigate the effects of the parents’ level of education and economic circumsta...
